- I had the privilege of working for Community Options for a year. Throughout my work experience as a Direct Support Professional, I worked with some amazing families and individuals with special needs. I learned so much about the hardships and joys these families encounter in their day to day life and in the community. I worked with individuals from the ages of five to twenty-seven and aimed to assist them in reaching their goals set by themselves and their families. First Presbyterian Childcare Center- Spring 2014 to Fall 2015 Lindsay Elementary School- January 18th to Present -I am currently teaching at a rural elementary school in Lindsay, Montana. I teach grades six through eight for reading, spelling, language, science, and social studies. At ten o'clock, I switch classrooms with the younger grade teacher and I have grades first through fourth for language, handwriting, and DOL. I love the rural setting and I also enjoy the multi-level classroom. I get to see the Zone of Proximal development in true form as the kids really do pick up on what the older students are learning. One of my students told me, "We don't need to go over this because I already heard you teaching the seventh and eighth graders about adverbs yesterday." Needless-to-say we still went through the lesson on adverbs but they had already gotten a jump start from listening to the other kids' lesson. |
Attended Teamboard Technology Workshop- March 2013
Attended ND Kindergarten Transition Summit- November 2013 - This event was centered on Kindergarten readiness skills that are necessary for students and families to be successful in the transition from home or preschool, to kindergarten. Throughout the day, I was able to listen to professionals in Early Childhood and Elementary Education speak about the importance of a Kindergarten transition program, and what was or was not working for them. Through this experience, I learned the extreme importance of a kindergarten transition plan; to help students and their families feel safe, comfortable, and prepared to take the next step in their child's education. Participated in Family Mentorship Program - Spring 2014 Taught and Assisted in Organizing at Carrie's Kids SEA Event - February 2014 -The event had a "Let Loose, Think Like Seuss" theme. We set up six lesson stations, where students completed Doctor Seuss themed art, math, language arts, science, music, and physical education activities. We also cooked and provided a "Green Eggs and Ham" breakfast for low income and homeless families. The event showed me how important it is to provide a safe learning environment for students. Many of the students came from tough home lives and this event provided them with an opportunity to get away from the stresses and struggles they were facing and to be in an environment where they can felt welcome, safe, and cared for. Attended presentation about life with Autism by Temple Grandin- Spring 2014 Assisted in Organizing BECEP Family Night - Spring 2014 Attended the North Dakota Association of Colleges for Teacher Education Annual Conference in Fargo- April 2014 Attended Symbaloo Technology Workshop - Fall 2014 Visited Teacher Resource Center - Fall 2014 Taught Social Studies Lesson at Heritage Center - Spring 2015 Taught Guided Reading Protocol to Volunteers at Solheim Elementary -Spring 2015 Taught Science to BLAST Students at Prairie Rose Elementary School -Spring 2015 Administered Reading Assessment to 1st Grade Student at Lincoln Elementary School- Spring 2015 Certified in Project Learning Tree- Spring 2015 Attended ND STE(A)M conference in Bismarck, ND- Spring 2015 Attended teacher workshop and Charlie Russell Symposium- June 2015 -Charlie Russell is a key figure in the history of Montana. He was a cowboy artist who captured the beauty of the wild west in all of its' glory. Many of his paintings, letters, doodles, and sculptures can be found at the historical society in Helena, MT where I attended this symposium. This workshop gave me lessons and ideas for other subjects that incorporate Russell's history and art as students learn to question and use a creative mind to discover Montana history. Attended inservice days and parent teacher conferences with cooperating teachers during student teaching experience. |
